Embankment is a large commercial building in the centre of Sligo, the largest city in the North-West of Ireland. The building was completely refurbished to provide modern third-generation office space and retail space. Our task was to create a brand for the building and in turn increase local awareness that this location was a key part of Sligo’s future.
The older a building is the greater the likelihood of it having many names over its lifetime. Embankment was no exception. There was some confusion locally as to what the building was actually called so it was important that the solution was bold and clear to avoid any more confusion.
Embankment was a lovely name to work with, and we wanted to design something that was simple, modern, highly visible with a retail flavour so it was clear from the first glance what one would expect from it.
Our research began with the geography of the location. Located on the Atlantic Coast with several world-renowned surfing spots we started our focus there. We paired this with the building’s position on the riverbank and began our sketches ending up creating a strong letter form as the mark – these characteristics are carried through into the word mark. Playing with scale and texture the leveraged mark allowed us to create contextual patterns which were used within the building itself.
